What you need to be a dog owner

Recently I went through the process of adopting a dog through the humane society.  Though the actual adoption was quick and didn’t take up a lot of time the other stages took a lot of dedication. You can’t just adopt any dog that you think is cute. Every dog has unique things that the owner has to pay attention to.

First you need to decide what you’re looking for in a dog. You need to decide things like size and breed. Another thing you should consider is whether you want to rescue or adopt from a breeder. Personally I believe that it is worth it to adopt from the humane society or any rescue group. You get to give a dog a second chance while also finding a companion.

In my experience of finding a dog something that is very important is communication between the other people who will be caring for the animal. You need to ask the other people that will be apart of this pets life what their requirements are. Make sure you find a dog that will suit everyone’s needs.

Now, some people have a bias against the Humane Society, be it because of the sheltering of abused and sick dogs there. When I got my dog, a Pekingese-Chihuahua mix, he had Kennel cough, a sort of common cold. This shouldn’t deter you from adopting a pet of your own– this is a common illness and can be treated VERY easily.

This animal, dog, cat, whatever it may be, needs to be loved. Your new pal may need some extra help getting started on the road to happiness in your home. Make sure you have all the supplies you need to ensure that your pet can be safe and comfortable. Make sure you also have the correct food, and any possible medications that your new friend might need.

When adopting your pet there are some things you will need, for the adoption process and also for your actual animal. These things are:

  • Someone who is 18 years or older. All pet stores or adoption agency’s require someone over 18 to adopt the animals.
  • Make sure you get food that fits your pets needs. Some animals have special dietary needs that you need to make sure you attend to. Do your research and make sure you know what is needed.
  • Collect the accessories, things like collars, leashes, toys, treats, and anything else required for your pet.
  • Do your research on what pet you’re interested in. Every breed of dog has different requirements and it’s important to be informed and know what you’re getting into.
  • Get educated with the specific animal you are adopting. Make sure you are aware of the medical history or any behavior problems.

With these basic steps you should be well on your way of bringing your new pet home. As long as you care for every need that your pet has, you should have a happy companionship with your new animal.
