Film can either leave you thinking and feeling emotion or something you turn on in the background. Some movie producers for Netflix say that their movies are meant to be played in the background. They purposefully over simplify because they believe that people don’t have enough attention span to focus on one thing. Even though Netflix has said they are trying to increase quality there seems to be no improvement. The money grabbing movies won’t make you feel anything. Soulless empty movies. Some Hollywood studios are spitting out several multi million dollar films a year yet none of them have substance.
The loss of the story is covered up by flashy colors and famous actors. Just because a movie has a big budget doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good. Another issue that is causing the decrease in quality is doubting the viewers intelligence. There are many movies that over explain and simplify the plot. Majority of people are able to put two and two together yet the producers don’t recognize this. When this over-explanation occurs it’s easy to consume yet does not cause critical thinking.
This process does not allow the viewer to make their own connections and derive a message or greater meaning. One of the beauties of film is that it can be interpreted in different ways for each person. I always see a movie completely different from someone else and that doesn’t mean that one of us is wrong, because there is no correct way to interpret a film. This creativity that comes from your own interpretation is beautiful. It inspires new thoughts, can motivate change and help someone find a deeper sense of meaning. This is such a wonderful thing that’s done in art but especially compelled through movies.
As we see movies that are over simplified it defeats this whole purpose. It takes away the creativity that was once there. There is not only one “correct” way to interpret the movie. Writers don’t feel like they need to write something intelligent if the viewer won’t understand it. The belief that the viewer will pay to see the movie because of a name so there is no need to put in effort. The movies that tend to be the best are ones that make me think. The best way to present something in a movie is show not tell. You can show the viewer what’s going on instead of feeling the need to explicitly state everything. Even though movies are having a decrease in quality this isn’t set. There is the hope that movie production companies will find a sense of passion again yet it’s starting to feel unlikely. There will always be passionate directors out there, it’s just important we recognize their creations.
