Every year at Herriman High they have a Multicultural Assembly to celebrate all of the cultures. The clubs and language classes perform for the whole school as a part of the assembly to share all about their cultures. What classes and clubs were in the assembly? According to Mrs.Williams the clubs that were a part of The Multicultural Assembly are “LIA, Spanish club, French club, ASU, Chinese club and POP. We also have a few other performances […] such as someone representing Brazil, possibly the Utah Pipe Band (bagpipes), and ‘American Rock Band,’ made up of some students here at the school.” There are a lot of clubs that were part of it along with some classes that performed in the assembly including Chinese one and three. This assembly took place on February 27th in the auditorium and took a little over an hour.
When asked, Violet Hyoeun Moon talked about what cultural performances were there and how they got chosen to be in the performance: “I know there’s going to be LIA, BSU, POP, Spanish Club, Chinese Club/Class, and we just signed up for the performances.” All cultural clubs can volunteer to be in the assembly, it can be a great way to spread other cultures’ awareness.
In the Multicultural Assembly Asian Student Union did five K-pop dances and did one tinikling dance. When asked about how students prepare for their performances, Moon said “So our group is split, Tinikling is one group, dance is another. So for the dance group, starting from January we practiced in the dance rooms every B day after school for about one and a half hours and a little into February we started doing practice every single day after school for two and a half hours, until 5 PM. Sometimes the dance room wasn’t available so we would use the little theater or tech atrium (with teacher permission). For the past two weeks Tinikling joined us. They usually practiced in the hallways away from the commons where a lot of people are.” Students take a lot of time and effort to practice and plan out their performances; this shows they’re dedication and longing to share their knowledge on their cultures with others.
The French club sang a song named La Seine, according to Madam Cramer, the three students that performed were a part of the club and they practiced performing a lot. Madame Cramer, when asked if the performance represents anything, said “It represents the culture in Paris.” That is a great way to show their culture.
Another group that showed their culture is the People of the Pacific Club. Lizzy Casey, a student at Herriman High, said that “For everyone that was in the assembly, there was a lot of practice in and outside of school.” If you attended the assembly, you would have seen many awesome performances and the time they took to practice for it. But performing can be a bit scary for those people on stage. Lizzy Casey said that “Being a part of the assembly was so scary but so fun. I was with all of my favorite people, so I just smiled and had fun.” Overall, the Multicultural Assembly was a great experience and taught students all about the different cultures at Herriman High.
