For our Lady Mustang Varsity Basketball team, they were instantly a contender for this year’s state tournament from the beginning of the season. With a five-game win streak in regular season, Herriman suffered a loss to a long time historic basketball program, Lone Peak. Despite the loss to the Knights, they bounced back to win six straight ending their regular season going 15-5 which is no easy feat.

Their last regular-season game was against West High with a dominating performance (81-35). This led Herriman’s girls into the playoffs with a lot of confidence to surpass the panthers again in the first round of the state tournament. They easily moved past Davis with a victory by twenty points to advance to the semi-finals. Wednesday, February 26 they played Fremont with a trip to the state championship on the line at the University of Utah.

It was guaranteed to be an uphill battle with Fremont ranked first in the state. They got off to a rocky start and trailed by 8 heading into the locker room at halftime. In the second half, they put up a valiant effort and played until the last second but came up short. With a final score of 61-32, the season came to an end.

Despite their loss to Fremont, the 2019-2020 season goes down as the best record in the history of Herriman’s girl’s basketball and shows how much the team is growing and improving. With four seniors leaving, there is a very strong young corps that should give everyone hope and raise expectations for next year’s team and a hopeful trip next time to the finals.
