The Mustangs’ journey to state had been a long one. Working long hours and long games in order to qualify for state. And by the end, their record was almost flawless. Ending the season with a record of 24-3 and second place at state
After a near perfect season of all wins and only one loss, the Mustangs were headed down a path towards state. It started with the quarter finals on February 24, 2025 against Lehi. Herriman had beat Lehi earlier in the season with a score of 64-52. The quarter finals were fought long and hard, the Mustangs gained the win with a score of 67-63 and moved onto the semi-finals.
The semi-finals game was against Corner Canyon who in the earlier season, Herriman had beaten 71-49 and later lost 69-53. The semi-finals was an amazing game with the student section cheering loud and proud. Mykenzi Kremers, Herriman High senior, says that the student section “was honestly electric, everyone was there and there was so much spirit.” The Mustangs won 64-55 and the crowd and the team was ecstatic. Elation was the feeling leaving the stadium, students and parents alike knew the Mustangs were going to bring it in the finals.
The finals had the biggest turn out for the student section and the parents, with the whole arena being filled with people from both teams cheering as loud as possible. Herriman High students filled up two whole sections. Herriman was facing Davis who they hadn’t played in the season or preseason, so the team had a challenge up ahead. This game started with Herriman taking the lead, but it quickly switched to Davis. Throughout the entire game it was like this, switching back and forth with both teams putting their hearts and souls into this game. Keira Stephany, Herriman High senior, said, “But then at the end, you could literally feel the anxiety and the panic when Davis got the lead.”
In the end, Davis had pulled forward in quarter four with only five minutes left. The Herriman boys had fought so hard and put up an amazing fight. Kremers says that “I just felt for the seniors, it sucks to have your season end being so close. But I thought the boys played great.” Their skills are amazing, but that night they just couldn’t get the points. Stephany says, “I think the boys played great. I think they had a lot of pressure on them, and under the circumstances they did their absolute best.” Everyone, parents, teachers, and students alike, are so proud of all the hard work and dedication the Mustangs put into their season and finals.
