The Herriman High Rugby season has started! As we progress through the season we will see how our Rugby team shows determination and dedication. In recent matches against Brighton and American fork we have seen how each game has a learning experience. Each game allows the team to build strategies and build stronger connections as a team.
Teamwork is one of the most important aspects of any sport. Rugby thrives on teamwork. It requires players to communicate effectively and trust each other on the field. If a team is strongly connected they can outperform even the strongest opponents. Building strong relationships with each player starts off the playing field and requires goals so each player is on the same page. JV Coach Chris Rowe when asked about the team’s goals for the season had this to say “ Obviously we want to get back to the state championship, but we really want to get these boys to learn the game and be ready for when they move to the varsity level.” Getting the team to work together and stay on track for the season takes a lot of work on the coaches end. “Coaches will get together on our own time and talk about what we need to work on for practices and what we need to be doing for the upcoming game. Everything we talk about is how we can best help our players improve.”
The Rugby coaches spend a lot of time during practice and during their freetime to better help their players prepare for their games. Every season the varsity team has a pre-season tournament in St. George. This allows players to get a head start to the game and to better sharpen their skills before the season begins. Now that the season is in full swing Varsity Coach Elivs Hanson says that their tactics now are to focus on what schools they are playing next. Coach Hanson says that each player is working extremely hard during practices to be prepared for upcoming games, “We are just making sure that our boys have worked on attacks and defence and more importantly their fitness.”
For a lot of teams, success is measured by winning, but the varsity team has a different definition of success. “ Our main goal is to just have fun, success is not always measured by wins and losses—it’s more about making sure we just have a good, enjoyable season.”
Both the Junior Varsity and Varsity team have been working through long practices and drills to hopefully make it to the state championships. It’s been an amazing journey to see their success over this season. There are many exciting matches ahead and everyone is encouraged to come.
