Every year the counselors at Herriman High go around the school to help students apply for college. The school counselors help in many ways. They provide college applications for all students, remind them to apply for colleges, and even provide links to all of the colleges around Utah to help students be more organized.

They provide online college tours, scholarships, financial aid, and career choices for the students. The counseling website has a lot of details on different college aids and all the information that the students need or want to get ready for college.

The counseling website has a schedule for the seniors to follow throughout the year to be college-ready.

On September 11, 2021, the school had a college fair for students to go around and learn about different schools. They also had college week from October 4th to the 8th to help students decide their career path and how to get there.

Having students ready for their future is one of the goals for the counselors. They ask all students during college week to apply online for college and to apply for FAFSA. FAFSA stands for free application for federal student aid. The college board states that FAFSA “is the form you need to fill out to get any financial aid from the federal government to help pay for college.” FAFSA helps colleges know how to help students that need help with paying for their college expenses.

On the counselor’s website, they state that “scholarships are gifts.” And those scholarships are provided by schools, employers, nonprofit organizations, etc. The state of Utah finances seniors with over 1,800 scholarships. There are also numerous grants and student loans that are available to students.

Grants are another helpful tool that the federal government, state government, and career schools use to aid seniors going to college. Scholarships and grants along with FAFSA can help a lot of people planning to attend college. They help pay for tuition and fees, books, and supplies that the student will need.

The counselors also recommend that students apply for work-study jobs. A work-study job is a type of employment that someone can have while in college to help pay for it. The job can often be community service or a related job of a student’s study field.

Overall the counselors really are trying to encourage students to apply for college. Many of the counselors truly want to see the students succeed. Michael Wilkey, the counselor for the last names Kl-NI stated that “there have been many conversations that I have had with students where they want to be a doctor but they don’t do well in school or just don’t come to school and so I try to convince them that one of those things needs to change or both for them to succeed.” That is their main reason for pushing all of the seniors toward college.
