Woodshop helping out K9

The woodshop class at Herriman High stepped up to the challenge of building dog scent detection training boxes to help the Unified Police Department.

With the help of donations, and a lot of hard work, Kathleen Turner’s woodshop class was able to create 10 boxes. They started building last year but ran out of time when the school year ended. They started again in September.

It took about a month for students from three different furniture design classes to complete the boxes. Mistakes were made, but they were able to figure out a way around it.

“I am so proud of these students who came together on a project that developed skills, teamwork, and respect for our police department,” said Turner.

The class delivered the boxes to the Unified Police Department. They were then given a tour of the special ops building, and a demonstration of how the boxes help train the dogs.

“The boxes donated will last us for years to come and will greatly enhance our ability to keep drugs and explosives off our streets,” Sgt. Chad Reyes said.
