Wrestling team takes it to the mat

Just a few months ago, Herriman High athletes were preparing physically and mentally for this year’s wrestling season.

Players physically dedicate their bodies to this sport. For months, each member of the team watch and maintain his ideal wrestling weight.

And Herriman High’s wrestling team has had a lot of success in the past few weeks.

Jaeron Jensen (‘16), an All-American wrestler, ranked No.1 overall in state, is ready to take on his opponents on the mat.

“I’ve created a meal plan, and a workout plan. I know what I’m going to be eating and when I’m going to rest or workout. It’s important to keep your body healthy and fit,” Jensen (‘16) said.

It’s important that each player doesn’t gain or lose too much weight because each wrestler is put into a specific weight class.

“Wrestling is a sport that teaches dedication and builds character,” wrestling coach Steve Bowdren says.

Now, each member of the team is eager to show how much they’ve prepared for each match.

“The daily [practice] routine consists of building strength, conditioning, and mastering the technique,” Bowdren said.

Each athlete will then their best to apply the techniques they learned to take control of their opponent and win points.

“[Wrestlers] practice as a team, train as a team, but when it comes down to it, you’re an individual on the mat. You just try your best to win so you can further help your team”, Jensen (‘16) said.

As wrestlers gain points during a match, those points will be totaled

“[Wrestling] is one of the only sports where it is you against one other person… You can’t blame a loss on any of your teammates,” Bowdren said, following up.

Our wrestling team hasn’t been placing blame, but placing 2nd in state and undefeated in region duals.

We can only continue to support the wrestling team as they work to win.
