After finishing with one of the best regular season records in school history (9-1), the boys varsity Football team faced a bitter knockout to Mountain Ridge, in a thrilling battle that ended 22-14 favoring the Sentinels. Although Herriman was able to explore rushing plays that broke through the Mountain Ridge defense, the game was won by the team who made the fewest mistakes and sadly that night, it was Mountain Ridge.
Although Herriman didn’t play a great game, that should not define their season this year: it was spectacular. Herriman’s 10-2 finish sets a new school record, and the last time the Mustangs had such a good season was 10 years ago in 2015, where Herriman went 11-3 and won the 5A State championship. Herriman’s 2025 success has much to do with its key players and the rebirth of the Matt Rickards program. They had previously struggled in the 2024 season finishing 3-9, but have heavily improved this year. Herriman is also projected to keep growing, as some players from their very talented JV squad, which finished 9-0 this season, will likely find a spot on the varsity team in the 2026 season. Herriman will also see some great Junior players returning to the main squad after being cut this season due to injuries.
Despite us not being able to make it to the finals this year there is still reason to be optimistic about next season, as Herriman will still have great players and a successful program. For a long time now Herriman has been producing many talented players, and has all it takes to make history and win the long sought for 6A State championship title.
Looking back at the season we see that throughout every game HHS found a unique playing style that allowed them to, at times, destroy their opponents and find decisive victories. Some games Herriman’s defense would end up scoring even more points than the offense. This versatility made Herriman unpredictable to its opponents, who often struggled to guard Herriman’s offense, while still worrying about Herriman’s defense rushing past their lines. This versatility was one of the components that made Herriman’s 2025 season so good. The team also led Herriman to impressive results like a 40-0 win at Bingham and a 62-32 win against Weber in the playoffs. Herriman had a great season, winning all their games but 2, which were both competitive matches against Mountain Ridge. We’ll hope to get revenge next season! Herriman’s season was one filled with highlights and, there are great take-aways from this season and it’s clear that Herriman is headed in the right direction and will have a spectacular season next year as well.
