Once again as the chilly weather rolls in, so does the Hearts of Gold season. It’s the jolliest time of the year and everyone is full of great cheer as the Herriman community works together to raise money for a charitable cause.
Hearts of Gold is an easy way to get involved in the Mustang community. From activities like Deck the Halls, all the way to odd jobs, we see an influx in student participation. Many of the clubs get involved in planning Hearts of Gold events. Kaia Murphy, a Herriman sophomore, states, “I’m so excited to experience Hearts of Gold. I’ve heard so many things about it and I really want to get involved!” Students anticipate the season of Hearts of Gold, even if it’s their first time experiencing it. The joy from previous years continues to be passed on.
Faculty members say the season fosters school spirit and a sense of pride. Students who often don’t participate in extracurricular activities tend to find a way to participate in Hearts of Gold festivities; whether it’s helping with fundraising events, cheering on classmates, or contributing to service projects, the tradition seems to draw in a wider range of participation than usual.
The student government starts their planning the previous summer through December to get Hearts of Gold going and to keep the students actively involved. A common theme with the students at Herriman is that Hearts of Gold represents more than charity. When asked how she feels about Hearts of Gold, Sicily Hoggan, Herriman Senior, states “Everyone at Herriman knows Hearts of Gold isn’t just a fundraiser. It’s this shared feeling that we’re part of something meaningful together.” She loves getting involved in the festivities because it “brightens her mood.”
As the season unfolds, one thing is clear, Hearts of Gold is more than just a tradition—it demonstrates what the Herriman community can accomplish as they work together. With the shared commitment, the laughter in the halls, and the reminder that no contribution is too small, students and faculty carry a sense of unity. It’s proof that the campaign spirit lasts longer than the chilly nights.
