This year, Herriman High School has welcomed a brand new club, the Climate Club. This club is dedicated to making the world we live in a better place through service and projects that help the environment. Even though it is new, the club has started bringing students together to make a difference.
One of the exciting parts of Climate Club is the combination of environmental action with creativity. The club does not only focus on service but also includes hands-on activities that allow members to repurpose everyday materials. The first official activity, hosted on Sept. 5, was making paper mâché orcas and whales using recyclable materials. This project was a chance to learn about reusing resources and an opportunity to express art and creativity. Because of the use of recyclable materials, this activity displays the club’s mission: making the world a better place through service and helping the environment.
Climate Club is not just a club for creativity, though, it is also a club for action. Carson Valentine, a junior and the Publicity Manager for Climate Club explained, “I joined Climate Club, because the world lately has been in shambles, and doing literally anything can help. You never know how to help as a teenager and Climate Club is the perfect solution. A way to change the world is handed to you.”
For those students who want to help but may not know where to start, Climate Club offers clear opportunities to get involved and give back to our community, with upcoming activities involving service projects and more.
These activities are just small steps toward the larger mission of improving the world, and they show that students can have an impact right here at Herriman High School.
The weekly meetings also give members the chance to spend time with one another and work toward a common purpose. Sitting together on Fridays in Mr. Norris’ room, students are not just making crafts, they are building a community of peers who care about the same issues and that will truly make a change. That sense of belonging is part of what makes Climate Club a meaningful addition to our school.
The addition of Climate Club this year marks a start in a positive direction for environmental activism in Herriman. It gives students the opportunity to take action, learn new skills, and see how their choices can affect the environment. By reusing materials, practicing service, and staying committed to their mission, members are proving that even small actions from students can matter. With every activity and student who joins, the club is growing into something bigger. The start of Climate Club is just the beginning of a new way for students to connect, to create, and to care for the world around them.
Anyone interested in learning more is encouraged to come by Mr. Norris’ room (1504) during the free hour on Friday. Climate Club is open to all, and it’s a chance to spend some time with friends, try creative projects, and be a part of something that makes a difference. Climate Club has only just begun, but its message is already clear: service, creativity, and care for the planet can come together, and when they do, even students can start making the world a better place.
