Herriman Softball team has their eyes on the prize

The Herriman Mustangs Softball team have two main goals this season: Take region and take state.

“I want to be able to come close to all of the girls individually and come together,” Allison Lloyd (‘15) said. “I want to be able to work as one team and take our region title and then that momentum to use as a boost to help us peak at state.”

The Mustangs began preseason with great success and the they looked to be a serious threat. They started with an 8-1 win against Layton and a 10-6 win against Spanish Fork.

Preseason play continued as the girls traveled to Nevada to play in the Tournament of Champions. There they played teams from California, Nevada and Arizona. They were the only Utah team to finish the tournament with a 4-2 record.

Coach Heidi Mckissick was very happy with her team’s effort by the end of the tournament. She was pleased with their record and mentioned that their biggest loss was by only two runs.

Herriman began region play with a huge 10-3 win against the Westlake Thunder. The Mustangs made no errors the entire game and made two home runs.

They extended their win streak against Taylorsville, Bingham, Lehi and American Fork.

When asked about her expectations for the remainder of the season Ashley Shetler said, “I think this is going to be the best season for us by far. We have so many differently talented girls and we all get along really well. I’m looking forward to where we will make it this year because of how strong our team is.”

The Mustangs have a tough schedule ahead of them, but they’re ready for the challenge.

Their work ethic and solid team chemistry will play a huge part in their journey to state playoffs.

“We are all one big family. We get along well and we treat each other like we are sisters,” Brittany Wood (‘15) said. “It doesn’t matter if you’re varsity or JV you still get treated the same.”
