HERRIMAN MUSTANG SOFTBALL ON A MISSION – UNDEFEATED IN REGION PLAY

The Herriman Mustangs Softball team is on a hot streak and don’t plan on ending it any time soon.

Currently undefeated and leading Region 4 with a perfect 10-0 record, the team has their eyes on two things: A region title and a state championship.

The Mustangs are two games away from achieving their goal of a region title.

“I want to be able to work as one team and take our region title and then that momentum to use as a boost to help us peak at state,” Allison Lloyd (‘15) said.

Herriman began non-region play with momentum and looked to be a serious threat on the field. They kicked off their season with big wins against Layton (8-1) and a 10-6 win against Spanish Fork.

The team traveled to Nevada to play in the Tournament of Champions, where they played teams from California, Nevada and Arizona.

“We were the only team from Utah that went 4-2,” Head Coach Heidi McKissick said. “We had a lot of the teams compliment us and say that they are scared of our hitters. Our biggest loss was by two runs.”

Herriman opened region play with a huge 10-3 win against the Westlake Thunder. The Mustangs played a clean game with no errors and they hit two home runs.

The rest of the season has included a long running winning streak against Lehi, American Fork, Lone Peak, Riverton and Pleasant Grove. In region play, the Mustangs have outscored their opponents by an average of 11.6 runs per game.

When asked about her expectations for the remainder of the season and heading into the postseason, Ashley Shetler (‘15) said, “I think this is the best season for us by far. We have so many differently talented girls and we all get along really well. I’m looking forward to where we will make it this year because of how strong our team is.”

A strong work ethic and solid team chemistry has played a vital part in the Mustangs’ journey to state playoffs.

“We are all one big family. We get along well and we treat each other like we are sisters,” Brittany Wood (‘15) said. “It doesn’t matter if you’re varsity or JV, you still get treated the same.”
